Alaska's state flag was designed in 1926 by Benny Benson, a seventh grade student who entered his design in a territorial flag contest. The Alaska Legislature adopted his design as the official flag of the Territory of Alaska on May 2, 1927. The flag consists of eight gold stars, the Big Dipper and the North Star, on a field of blue. In Benny Benson's word, "The blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, an Alaska flower. The North Star is for the future state of Alaska, the most northerly of the Union. The Great Bear, symobolzing strength.
