Volcanoes on the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska peninsula and in the Wrangell Mountains are part of the "Ring of Fire" that surrounds the Pacific Ocean basin. There are more than 80 potentially active colcanoes in Alaska, about half of which have had a least one eruption since 1760. The eruption of Augustine Volcano, elev. 4,025ft, in lower Cook Inlet on March 27, 1986, sent ash 8 miles high and disrupted air traffic in southcentral Alaska for several days.
